Olive oil against type I diabetes
The unlimited beneficial properties of extra virgin olive oil help our good health in many ways.
Studies, however, continue to be made and a recent one adds another beneficial property to extra virgin olive oil, that of fighting type I diabetes.
The study was conducted by the University of Napoli Federico II, and its results were published in the Spanish Mercacei. He showed that the use of extra virgin olive oil reduces the level of glucose in the blood in people with type 1 diabetes after eating, something that is not observed when butter is used instead.
Patients participated in the trials using a remote integrated measuring system with insulin pumps. For patients with type I diabetes, the effects of high-carbohydrate and high-fat diets on the timing and dose of insulin at meals were considered.
The researchers said that extra virgin olive oil is a staple of the Mediterranean diet and has already been shown to have beneficial properties in other cardiovascular diseases, high blood pressure and fatty liver.
The study also concludes that lowering postprandial glucose levels not only helps prevent chronic complications of diabetes but also improves patients' quality of life. The researchers explain that ‘the beneficial effects of extra virgin olive oil observed in this study may be related, in addition to its content of monounsaturated fats, to other bioactive ingredients, such as polyphenols, with their antioxidant activity. On the other hand, let's not forget that extra virgin olive oil is a fat-rich substance. Therefore, the amount used, both in diabetics and non-diabetics, should always be taken into account with the total calorie intake. This study is another reason to spread its consumption around the world.
The Golden Olympia company based in Ancient Olympia specializes in the production, bottling, standardization and marketing of extra pure virgin olive oil.
